There's Still That Light

For a certain group it was a putrid weekend. That group is the current and former Virginia Tech Hokies. It started on Saturday and continued on to the first day of this week. We will start with Saturday:

The number 13 ranked Hokies were playing a less than stellar Pittsburgh team that had recently been man handled by the Cincinnati Bearcats. They came out and from the beginning were being outplayed. Logan Thomas, previously a top NFL prospect, threw for less than 50% completion and three picks with only one touchdown. That touchdown was the only thing that gave the Hokies hope in this game, and as the loss does indeed destroy any minuscule hope of the National Title and drop the Hokies from the rankings, it does not prevent a fan from being optimistic. The loss was to a Big East team and the Hokies already have a huge division win over Georgia Tech. This still puts the Hokies in prime position to return to the ACC championship game and possibly the Orange bowl. If you recall Logan Thomas caught fire last year after a tough loss to Clemson, so maybe a non conference loss is exactly what Virginia Tech needs to return to top form.

Secondly, the next day came the NFL. Just as Arizona seemed primed to run out the clock and finish the upset of one of the best teams in the AFC, former Hokie Ryan Williams coughed up the ball, giving the Patriots great field position and almost certainly the win. Williams, who seemed primed to become the Cardinals starting back has looked poor in the first two weeks and the fumble was the cherry on top. But the tides turned when the Patriots missed the potential game winning field goal. The optimistic side here points to the fact that the Cardinals still won the game. Not only that but Ryan Williams still has extreme amounts of potential to be a game changing back.

Lastly, former Hokie Josh Morgan had possibly the worst weekend of the group. After his seven yard catch, he lost his composure when Cortland Finnegan pushed him. Morgan then preceded to throw the ball at Finnegan right when the Redskins seemed primed for a game tying drive. This bone headed move virtually ended the game as the 62 yard field goal seemed like a pipe dream to go through the uprights. Although there is not much optimism towards Morgan, as he cannot be on Shanahan's good side after that penalty, he is still on the team, which is a positive. He is still on that team full of young, electric players that have an extremely positive outlook for the future.

It goes to show, even in despair you can stay positive and optimistic, in sports and in life. Even when the worst seems imminent there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
